Tangier (in Amazigh: ⵟⴰⵏⵊⴰ) is a Moroccan city located in the north of the Kingdom of Morocco on both coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its population is 1,065,601 people, according to the 2014 General Population and Housing Census, and it is therefore the sixth largest city in Morocco in terms of population. Tangier is distinguished by being a meeting point between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean on the one hand, and between the European and African continents on the other hand. Tangier is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region and is one of the most important cities in Morocco. The city is considered one of the most important centers of trade and industry in North Africa. It is also an important economic pole due to the large number of headquarters of institutions and companies, and one of the most important political, economic, cultural and educational centers in Morocco. The history of the city of Tangier is very rich due to it being a meeting point for many Mediterranean civilizations. The city was established to be a Berber metropolis and a Carthaginian port during the fifth century BC. Several successive civilizations influenced this city, starting with the Greeks and ending with the Islamic civilization.
